Mercury Retrograde Conjunct Chiron

Mercury Retrograde is well underway! And poised for some heavy hitting conjunctions, or connections with specific points in the sky. First up is the Asteroid Chiron.

We are being called to rethink how we are supposed to be healing in this life time. What habits are we here to grow beyond? what inborn knee jerk reactions have, time and time again, shown us that they are not bringing us peace, bringing us growth, and calling in our higher purpose in life? If you are still suck trying to learn this lesson, the universe is calling for you to work through whatever wounds are triggering these behaviors and thoughts. Call it karma from past lifetimes. Call it childhood wounding—circumstances beyond your control. Call it generational trauma. Whatever resonates most with you, that’s what we are talking about right now. Mercury is calling your attention to a massive amount of rethinking in the sign Aries: the arena of self, and all things comprising the self. Actions, beliefs, behaviors, foundations of who you are. And with Chiron, we are talking about these wounds, deep wounds that quite possibly predate your incarnation on Earth.

Right now, the universe is calling your attention to these wounds in order to heal. The first step to any healing is noticing the issue. Pause, and take note. Where in your psyche are you holding this pain? Where in your body is this trauma showing up? Just as the universe is deeply connected to our individual constitutions on a multitude of levels, our past is connected to our present state. Many people have heard about the body holding onto trauma. This goes much deeper than “ignoring the pain isn’t going to make the issue go away.” Pain, physical or psychological, when unaddressed, burrows itself deeper into ourselves, often going from an acute experience to a chronic one. Now imagine pain over a lifetime. Or pain over multiple lifetimes. That is going to be so deeply imbedded, we might not even recognized what it would mean to experience life without this agony. That is the wound Chiron represents.

This level of wounding is fractal-like in nature. Fractal is a mathematical term for, simply put, something that looks similar to itself over scale. Think of a fern. When you look at the entire plant, versus one section of the plant, one branch, one leaf… the entire plant is similar to itself across scale. That same concept applies in astrology: themes over a lifetime are represented in the short term as well. As applied to Chiron, painful experience will keep being reinforced until the wound is addressed. It’s as if the universe is making sure you have ample opportunity to address whatever this issue is. Say you grew up in a household where something about you was judged as unacceptable. Perhaps a primary caregiver responded to you in some sort of negative way: withdrawing comfort and validation, responding harshly or punitively, belittling or shaming, reacting with confusion or from a place of fear or even terror. Internalizing these negative experiences often leads to a psychological wound. Through life, this experience can be rehashed over and over again: an unsupportive teacher who balks at your attempts at mastery, a boss who treats you as hopeless or your opinions as unworthy of serious consideration, a life partner who doesn’t make room for your dreams, desires, or individuality. A lifetime of the same negative message, reinforced time and time again. You might start to think “am I doomed?” or worse yet, internalize the message to be “I am doom.” The challenge in all this is to instead see this as your soul’s deep work: you are here to move through these experiences, and triumph in the face of this specific adversity. The universe is simply providing the opportunity again, and again, and again. Until you get it right. You can’t graduate until you pass the class, so you are forced to retake it until you do. Because what is the alternative? Withdrawal. Withdrawal from life. Taking that wound, and driving it deeper and deeper. It needs to be addressed. It always needs to be addressed. Shying away from this work is where we start seeing the cross over between chronic illness and a lifetime of turmoil. Presenting you with the same outward experience wasn’t enough to capture your attention, so now you have the manifestation of the situation on multiple levels.

I cannot tell you how many times I have seen people begin to address their core trauma and simultaneously see a decrease in the symptoms of their seemingly unrelated chronic illness. Everything is connected, and this isn’t a new discovery. Ancient medicine has been relaying this same messages for thousands of years. And so has Astrology. The oneness of consciousness expands into the oneness of everything. It is all connected. Use this to your advantage.

We all have Chiron sitting in our natal charts somewhere very specific. We all have some sort of wounding that we are challenged to acknowledge, address, and champion in this lifetime. And once we have done that work, we can be a beacon of wisdom and inspiration for others healing similar wounds. Right now, Chiron is calling out attention to wounds as they relate to the self, as they relate to our ability to take action, and as they relate to our ability to claim our place. Mercury Retrograde is going to reinforce this current call of Chiron when passing over Chrion’s place in the zodiac on April 15th. Mercury Retrograde coupled with Chiron is about rethinking, reworking, and releasing.

If you’re feeling that restlessness, try cueing into it. What exactly is feeling restless in you? Mercury challenges us to get curious about these topics. Explore. What changes could be made, changes in a situation, changes in your goals or habits, or even changes in your outlook? When you think about these topics, do you feel a pull to “YES” when a specific thought crosses your mind? That’s probably the space that you are being pulled into for your next chapter. That’s where focus fosters growth. It’s time to rethink the former approach, rework it into something more productive, and release anything that isn’t serving you. Seize this opportunity, and capitalize on these universal opportunities! It is your time, and the enlightened selfishness of focusing on you is warranted!

What if you aren’t feeling restless? This could be a strong indication that you are already on a positive trajectory. Nonetheless this would still be an opportune time for reflection. Reflecting on how you are valuing yourself, how and why you are or are not implementing changes in your life, reflecting on what you’d like the next phase of your life to manifest and play our, reflecting on what is important to you and how you are making time for those things you value. Reaffirm all the positive aspects of your life and how you approach it, because we all deserve that self-recognition! Especially when we have been working hard! Reflect, reaffirm, recharge. Validate all that is valid in you!

Tomorrow (April 8) we will experience a Solar Eclipse in Aries

While every astrologer out there has pretty much already taken their stab at interpreting the eclipse, I was very resistant to put much energy into promoting this grand event. There’s so much going on in the sky already this month that I want to focus on, and lunar phases have been such a focus of my work over the past year, I really felt a call to place my own astrological gaze elsewhere. However, I’ve recently had quite a few people reach out to me, many coming from a place of anxiety or fear over this upcoming eclipse. I now feel called to put my own two cents out into the astrological realm, perhaps as just one voice offering a tiny pull in the collective direction of “spiritual healing.” I stick by my earlier intuition that Pluto in Aquarius has the Best Supporting Actor award for much of the upcoming astrological happenings, and the key word when getting Pluto work right is surrender.

Here in Maine, we are going to have the visual of the solar eclipse at its most exciting right around 3:30PM—3:33 to be exact, but I will leave the spirit numbers discussion aside. However, it’s worth noting that the timing here is significant. Astrologically, the eclipse’s exact conjunction is a little over an hour beforehand, at 2:20PM. What is significant about the exact conjunction of the Moon and the Sun in Aries as experienced from the midpoint of our globe is that in perfect alignment with that Sun and Moon at 19 degrees 24 minutes of Aries we also find the asteroid Chiron. And it is also at exactly 19 degrees 24 minutes. Conjunctions, or objects in the sky coming into alignment within a certain sign, are felt with up to about 10 degrees of separation. Of course they won’t be felt as strongly the further apart they are, but anything within 2-3 degrees is typically considered a tight conjunction, and we use the word “exact” to describe a conjunction where objects are within 1 degree of each other. That 1 degree of margin is called the orb. The Sun and the Moon for the eclipse will be “exact” with respect to a 1 degree orb starting at 12:36PM until 4:03PM. Before and after those times, the orb will stretch beyond that 1 degree of separation, however the energy of the Sun and the Moon’s conjunction is some of the strongest energy, considering the importance of both of these luminaries. Astrological significance is essentially caused by gravity, and the two objects in space with the most gravitational impact felt here on Earth are the Sun and the Moon, thus making them two extremely important astrological entities. I’m explaining all this about the orb because at exactly 2:20:52PM on Monday April 8th, not only do we have the Sun and the Moon meeting at 19 degrees 24 minutes of Aries, but we also have Chiron already sitting right there, waiting for the event.

Chiron represents a deep wound. This is usually something that has been present our whole lives, activated early on with echoes of this wound reverberating through life, as if the universe keeps asking for you to address it. Chiron work is deep work, and is incredibly transformational. When you are working on exploring Chiron wounds, you are essentially learning to heal yourself in a new way that can be groundbreaking in itself. When the wound of Chiron is addressed, you are then guided to take that knowledge and healing experience out into the world and heal others. You become the learned healer. Thus, Chiron is affectionately known as “The Wounded Healer.”

As universal synchronicity would have it, I’ve recently heard some very spiritual stories from people who would not identify themselves as particularly spiritual people. One of them was a coming out story, where he described his deep fear of rejection, his mother’s calm demeanor, and her immediate acceptance of his sexuality. This person said that walking away from that conversation he felt light as a feather, like he was floating. He said it was the best day, he had never felt so blissful. Never once in the telling of the story was the word “spiritual” mentioned, however my entire interpretation of this was “this was a spiritual experience.”

Following your truth, standing in your truth, declaring who you are, that is all Aries work. Aries is the warrior. Aries is about asserting who you are, your place in the world, and your right to be here. While many conversations such as this are not always well received, the important piece of this was his ability to stand in his power and validate for himself that his truth was worth expressing. Feeling light as a feather after such an experience of validation and acceptance, both from self and from family, further promotes the idea that this was a spiritual experience, one that reverberated through his whole being, an evolution of soul. You need not identify as a spiritual person to have spiritual experiences. Just as meditation and ritual can take the form of exercise, puzzles, or fishing on a Sunday morning, spirituality takes many shapes. Standing in your truth and speaking from the heart is a spiritual endeavor. It is very fitting that this story was shared during Chiron’s transit through Aries, and just before this New Moon Eclipse meets Chiron: healing a wound through Aries assertion opening the doors for a new beginning of acceptance and wholeness within a close relationship. This was a profound example of what this energy could offer to all of us who harness it with such warrior courage.

So what does all this mean? The energy in the sky right now supports this kind of spiritual courage. Where in your life do you need to speak your truth? Even just to yourself? What realities are you ready to accept? The energy for that kind of healing is opening up, offering you a platform of valor to bring your truths to the surface. Fear is a lower expression of Aries energy, like the fear of the warrior who is in danger, potentially losing the war. We are being invited to move beyond that fear into a place of active participation in order to enable healing.

The ruler of Aries is Mars, planet of action. Mars is currently in the dreamy water sign Pisces, and is conjunct Saturn. Saturn can represent a blockage of some sort, an area that needs sustained effort over time in order to accomplish great works. We could think of Saturn as stalling out that Mars energy, blocking Mars from progressing, but the vibe I am getting is more one of a firm grip, keeping Mars steady on course. To put firey Mars in the water sign Pisces, we see that we have the power to push through frightening experiences. Pisces is about transcendence, echoing Pluto’s call for surrender. The courage to do deep spiritual work that evolves the soul, that is Mars in Pisces. And Saturn is there, encouraging that work. If you’ve worked with me astrologically on any sort of consistent basis, you’ve heard me call Saturn “Daddy Discipline.” I mean this affectionately—Saturn is here as an elder guide. Saturn shows us where and how to put in the hard work. To have strategical Saturn holding Mars’s hand, Saturn is bringing focus to that at times hot headed Mars. “Keep your eye on the prize.” Steady.

How many people are making the pilgrimage to see the eclipse in the “full coverage” zone? That’s a very Mars (action) way of reacting to this energy: going on an adventure to experience and celebrate all that the sky is offering us. That is a beautiful expression of this energy, honoring Mars in Pisces. How many of us have recently felt a pull to explore something sensitive in our lives? Ancestry or genealogy work, hard conversations with loved ones as we enter new seasons of life, taking time with self to explore something that has been weighing on the mind. These are all excellent examples of this energy’s expression in our life. Where we have the Sun and the Moon coming together, it would be a great time to tune into your inner most desires. Following the Sun leads you to sanity, and following the Moon leads you to happiness, and they are going to be joined together in action oriented Aries; take this opportunity to ask yourself what bold steps in your own life do you feel called to take? What steps would lead you to sanity and happiness? Sometimes these messages are hard to hear because we are being called to do something difficult. Remember that the most beautiful and freeing times, times when we feel like we are floating, come after dark or scary experiences where we have triumphed.

Just after 6:00 eastern time on Monday evening, April 1 2024, Mercury will appear to change directions in the sky. This phenomenon is known as planetary retrograde. From where we are here on planet Earth, it appears that a planet is moving backwards in the sky, and this is illustrated in astrology as a planet moving clockwise around the zodiac. While we may be use to clockwise direction as the equivalent of “forward,” when it comes to astrology, the clockwise movement of the planets actually signifies moving backwards through the signs, as the right side of the chart is actually representative of the western horizon rather than the eastern.

So what does this mean? It means that Mercury’s speed in the sky slows to a stop, known as the planet stationing. When a planet stations, such as Mercury will tomorrow evening, it is essentially stopping in order to change directions. Mercury will then pick up speed as it travels backward through the sign of Aries, increasing speed in the initial days, until it is at its fastest point, the midpoint of the retrograde, on April 11th. From that midpoint on, Mercury will then appear to slow down again, preparing to station in order to switch directions for the second time in Aries, ending the retrograde movement, and instead moving in a direct path, ascending through the degrees of Aries for a second time in this calendar year.

So why is this speed important? It’s as if Mercury has a pen in its hand, buzzing along, drawing a line through the zodiac, tracing its path. When it begins to slow, the pen’s ink bleeds out onto the paper, causing a thicker and thicker line due to the slow movement along the paper. If you were to take your own pen, and start drawing a line on the paper, slow to a stop, and then change directions and move back over the line you’ve already created, you would certainly create quite the impression on that poor piece of paper! This is a great visual for the impression a slowing, and subsequently stationing, planet can have! Many people will feel the effects of the added intensity of Mercury highlighting with a bit of extra ink its movement through Aries. You may already be feeling some of the sometimes subtle but ever-present effects of this retrograde season, as we have many different planetary events occurring in Aries right now, as well as in Pisces, the sign right before Aries, and the sign where the ruling planet of Aries, Mars, is currently transiting.

In the next coming weeks, there will be some very astrologically significant events as Mercury retrogrades through the sign of Aries, including a conjunction with the asteroid Chiron as well as a conjunction with the Moon’s North Node, a significant point in the sky signifying an evolutionary goal of one’s soul. Opportunities for growth through healing abound this Aries season; what better way to ring in the fertile promises of spring than with your own springtime of the soul.

11:07 PM EST

I am very excited for Mercury’s retrograde this Aries season!

First off, Mercury is retrograding entirely in the sign of Aries, offering a huge focus in this powerful formative fire sign. This feels like a great use of that DOING energy that Aries season offers us each year. To start the equinox on such a powerful note gives everyone a bit of extra directionality.

Secondly, the shadow period of the retrograde began yesterday, the day before the Sun enters Aries. We are being welcomed into this Aries season with such a grand red carpet, it feels like quite the event!

Third, there are some powerful aspects being made to Mercury during this retrograde season. Best Supporting Actor might very well go to Pluto in Aquarius, sextiling Mercury direct on Thursday March 21st, right at the beginning of Mercury retrograde’s shadow. It’s almost as if Pluto is giving us the essential push to ensure we are going to surrender. Just pull back and pay attention because whatever we are reworking during this retrograde, Pluto is on your team.

It’s sort of comical that the retrograde begins on April 1st, April Fool’s Day. Retrograding Mercury has a reputation for being a trickster of sorts, however those tricks aren’t in malice as Pop Astrology leads people to believe. These tricks are there to pull your attention in one direction or another. In Aries, maybe you are physically unable to get through what you are trying to do. Maybe your efforts are pulling you in an unintended direction, or MANY directions to the point that you feel scattered and a loss of control. Pluto’s message is surrender. Stop trying to control. Pull back and observe.

Who will be fooling themselves? People living in fear. People stubbornly focused on making things work that are destine to simply not pan out in this retrograde cycle. People panicking and jumping to conclusions “the world is against me!” That is not reality. And that’s not the ultimate message of Mercury retrograde.

Are you ready for your a-ha moment? Without any set in stone guarantee, I can say it’s going to come on or around April 11th, at the midpoint of the retrograde. When Mercury is at the halfway point of its retrograde, it conjuncts the Sun in what is called its “inferior conjunction.” Mercury and the Sun will meet in Aries at 22 degrees. The inferior conjunction provides clarity; it’s the moment where we see exactly what this retrograde has been about in each one of us. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s absent. Maybe you’ve been “getting it right” all along and the universe is simply gazing upon you, nodding contently. But sometimes, we need that shift, and the redirection. The a-ha moment becomes more realized when this is the case.

We are going to be gifted two more opportunities to rework and rethink this calendar year: a Leo/Virgo retrograde in August, and then a Sagittarius retrograde in late November, into December. So much fire! I love the feeling of the energies involved in this year’s reworking: all three fire signs of the Zodiac, with a little Virgo work sprinkled in. And I use the word “work” in the most affectionate of ways, as Virgo is concerned with work that matters. An exciting year ahead, indeed!

As far as the next month and a half is concerned, it’s time to start paying attention to the universe’s energy and to where Aries is calling your attention. What kind of changes are necessary in your life? Where is your warrior energy best spent? What areas in the past have you left unresolved in the realm of Aries? Aries energy is linked to self-respect and personal dignity, hence its affinity for warrior vigor. How are you going to speak up and show your energy, internally or at large? It’s time to own your value, and defend your place in your own story and in the world.

Screen Shot 2024-01-11 at 5.39.50 AM.png

New Moon in Capricorn, our first New Moon of the calendar year.

This New Moon is exactly Squaring the Nodes, meaning we are ready for new beginnings that address ripening karma. Humanity is ready to take the next step (avoid falling back into old patterns) both on a personal level and as a community in oneness.

This frequency is reinforced by Mars being in Capricorn; Mars being the ruler of the sign Aries where the North Node is currently. I like to think about the North Node in Aries as promoting necessary selfishness.

Sagittarius Mercury is in its shadow from going direct last week: the things the retrograde was asking us to rethink/readdress as we closed 2023 we now have the opportunity to really focus on that growth and put it into practice. Venus is in Sagittarius too, which calls us to really think about either how partnerships or relationships are showing up for us when we are addressing these ways of thinking and communicating. Is it time to move on from some people? Is it time to change how you are relating to people?

With this New Moon chart, cast in Southern Maine, we have only one planet in any of the second or third quarters of the chart of the moment: Uranus. This can mean unexpected challenges, interactions, or epiphanies. It’s in the fourth house, the house of home and nurturing. The house of the mother. That could be literal upheaval within a nurturing relationship or it could mean something changing within the dynamic of the home life. Uranus is trining the New Moon pretty tightly. A trine is a flowing angle, showing us that whatever is happening is necessary and helpful for these new beginnings. Trust that process.

The three most influential components to a chart, the Sun, Moon, and the Ascendant, are all in Capricorn. The Ascendant flavors the rest of the chart, so to speak; so every piece of this event chart will be flavored with Capricorn. We also have Pluto just about to leave Capricorn, in ten days. Pluto will enter Aquarius, the ruler of Uranus, which can bring significant and transformative changes to old systems of beliefs, old systems of being, shaking up some traditions or traditional ways of thinking. This is reinforcing that promise that Uranus in the fourth will be beneficial for this changing time and new beginnings. At the top of the sky, how this moment is seen on a grand scale, we have the sign Scorpio, which is ruled by Pluto and classically Mars, the ruler of our Nodes who as we discussed, is in Capricorn. When you see messages and themes reinforced like this, it basically is like having multiple hands guiding you in one direction. You almost can’t help but move forward with the energy.

We still have some of these slower moving outer planets occupying their signs they’ve been settling into for a while: Saturn and Neptune both in Pisces, and Jupiter in Taurus. All of these giants are moving direct right now, each with their own mission and influence, however keep in mind that Capricorn lens we are viewing this entire chart through. Flavor it with Capricorn: hard work, determination, really bringing your dreams (Pisces) into the physical reality.

Saturn and Neptune are in the second house for the New Moon. The second house is all about resources, beauty, personal finances, your daily routines, habits, work ethic etc. How can these energies we have been feeling for a while now (Neptune entered Pisces over a decade ago, and Saturn has been in Pisces since March 2023 and will remain there for over another year) move us forward in those areas of life? Pisces is spiritual, adding a developmental aim of the healer or some sort of mysticism, behind the veil, transparency… and we have Neptune, ruler of Pisces, meaning the Planet Neptune is the part of or psyche concerned with Piscean topics: spirituality, consciousness, and the unknown but also solitude and transcendence. And Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, showing us that this area of life (routines, resources, etc.) could very much be involved in what this New Moon’s beginnings are pointing towards.

Jupiter is in the third house, across from the house it wants to be in, but another thinking and growing house. Jupiter is expansive, and here we see another reinforcement point with Jupiter in the third, the house ruled by Mercury, and Mercury is in Sagittarius, the sign ruled by Jupiter. It’s a wide trine as well, however these already are such reinforced placements that it’s just icing on the cake to see that trine. Jupiter is in Taurus, which is ruled by Venus, and Venus is in Sagittarius as we discussed above, ruled by Jupiter. So again, we are looking at these relationships, these old ways of relating and asking “are these relationships serving me? Am I relating in my best way possible? Should I be moving on, cutting ties, asking for more?” That idea of necessary selfishness within the nodal story is coming back into play. It’s time to get real with your goals, get real with yourself, and shed anyone or anything or any behavior… that is not serving that goal.
